Alice Barnes finished fourth to achieve her goal of a top-five position at the latest round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross-country.

Round three of the season-long competition took place in Lenzerheide, Switzerland for which Barnes had set herself the target for the under-23 race.

The British Cycling Senior Academy Programme athlete finished tenth at the previous world cup, but a concerted month of training and taking second at the British Cycling National Road Championships gave her the belief that more was possible.

Starting the race in 16th on the grid, Barnes quickly moved into the top ten and on the final two laps made gained four places.

On her last lap, Barnes posted the fastes lap of the entire race; enough to score a career-best result of fourth, one minute 36 seconds down on the leader.

In the elite women’s category Annie Last also had a good ride with her highest finish of the season so far.

Despite a bad start, the British champion advanced to tenth place, posting lap times within the top ten in the second half of the race.

Grant Ferguson had a race to forget in the under-23 men’s competition. Riding in the top ten, a puncture cost the British Cycling Olympic Podium Programme athlete time and a points finish.

Ferguson crossed the line 40th, while senior academy riders Iain Paton and Mike Thompson finished 50th and 56th respectively.

Round four of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross-country takes place in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada on 2 August.
