British Cycling is pleased to announce that from today all NHS workers will be offered a free three-month Commute Membership, providing them with additional support and peace-of-mind insurance up to £15 million for their daily cycling.
The offer, which is being supported by HSBC UK, is being made in recognition of the incredible work that NHS workers are doing to help combat the current crisis, and of the vital role that bicycles are playing in safely transporting so many of them to work.
The offer follows yesterday’s announcement that British Cycling, Sport England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have contributed £100,000 to the Wheels for Heroes crowdfunding campaign, which is aiming to provide 1,000 new loan bicycles for NHS staff.
British Cycling Chief Executive, Julie Harrington, said:
“Like the rest of the country, we at British Cycling are incredibly keen to show our gratitude to the NHS workers who are going above and beyond to look after the nation’s health at this time.
“We know that so many NHS staff already rely on their bikes day in, day out, to get to and from work, and many others will have turned to cycling more recently as an alternative to public transport. Through this membership offer we want to provide them with full peace-of-mind cover and all the additional support they need to ride at this time, and we are grateful for the support of HSBC UK in enabling us to do this.
“I am genuinely humbled by the way in which all corners of the cycling community have rallied to support the NHS, pharmacies and care services in recent weeks, and in particular the clubs and volunteers who are selflessly couriering prescriptions and vital supplies. We have always known that cycling can be a force for social good, and there have been some shining examples of that in recent weeks.”
The membership offer includes £15m third party liability insurance, legal support and a range of retail discounts. These include the official sportswear supplier of the Great Britain Cycling Team Kalas, Evans Cycles, Halfords, and enhanced benefits from bike insurance provider Bikmo. NHS staff who are existing British Cycling members will receive an equivalent discount off their next membership renewal.
All new members will be provided with regular support and resources to aid their daily cycling, including the Commute Smart video series, which is designed to provide riders with all of the skills and knowledge they need to commute on Britain’s roads.
Luke Harper, Head of British Cycling Partnership at HSBC UK, said:
“We’re delighted to be able to introduce this new offer for NHS staff, and say thank you for their continued efforts to help us overcome the challenges our country currently faces. Whether it’s through tips and advice, discounts at popular cycling retailers or the peace-of-mind liability insurance, we hope that being a British Cycling member will support them with their cycling in the months ahead.”
