What kind of riding do you do?

Mainly commuting. Almost every journey into work for the last 10 years has been on my pushbike. The last two years I’ve been cycling a 42 mile round trip into central London, three days a week.

What do you enjoy most about cycling

The sense of freedom and achievement. I love not being stuck in commuter traffic or tied to trains and I love the fact that it’s all powered by me. By cycling to work not only am I commuting, but I’m keeping fit as well.

What’s your favourite ride?

I’ve just come back from a holiday in Tenerife where I cycled from Los Christianos to the top of Mount Teide. It was a gruelling four hour climb to the top. As I entered the Teide National Park, I tagged onto the back of Team Sky, who regularly train on the mountain. Coming back down was crazy, taking less than an hour. All in a 56 mile round trip and 2000 meter climb. Fantastic!

What’s your top cycling tip to share?

Be seen. Wear bright colours and lots of lights. LED lights are very effective, batteries last for a long time and are relatively cheap now. On my winter commute my bike is like a mod’s scooter from the front and a Christmas tree from the back.

If you had a tandem, who would you like to ride it with?

My wife. We love camping and walking and occasionally take a cycle ride together, but she really can’t keep up, even though I always hold back. A tandem would make it easier for both of us.
