Mark from Thames Ditton took on the formidable Alpe d'Huez this summer! Here's his profile.
What kind of riding do you do?
In my past mountain biking and road cycling. I was a cycle courier in Bristol back in the late 1990s when I should have known better. Since my twin boys were born, it's all road cycling. I do a lot of solo night training, early mornings and solo sportives.
What do you enjoy most about cycling?
The personal challenge and the goal based training of regular scary sportives.
What’s your favourite ride?
La Marmotte - my recent claim to fame is this year's event where I rode and finished even though temperatures during the event were in the high 30s and into the mid 40s on Alpe d'Huez. Over 3000 people did not finish this year.
What’s your top cycling tip to share?
On sportives, other than fluids, learn to be self-sufficient and then if you get served a curve ball (ie, there's no food at a feed station) then you are ready for it. Also, invest in new, good quality tyres, tubes and pads for major events to avoid the disappointment of punctures etc.
If you had a tandem, who would you like to ride it with
My wife as she is faster than me! Maybe Beryl Burton.
