The Scarborough Festival hosted the penultimate round of the British Cycling Junior Road Series on Sunday with Tom Pidcock and Rachel Jary taking victories.

Junior men

Tom Pidcock and Rob Scott took first and second respectively in the junior men’s race. The pair took the lead with four laps remaining and time trialled to take a well-deserved one-two for VCUK PH-MAS.

Charlie Meredith (Giant CC-HALO Films) took the sprint for third to keep the series wide open going into the last round at Wales at the end of the month.

A brisk opening few laps saw Conor Davies (Speedflex RT) and Ollie Peckover (HMT with JLT Condor) jump away and soon open up a 20 second lead to the big field.

The pair stayed away as the race rode around the top circuit, a lone attack came from Catford CC’s Buauna Ball but he was unable to make ground on the lead pair.

The lead pair kept the race at bay on the opening lap of the big circuit but as it hit the climb for the second time, Peckover started to drop back to the main field.

Davies looked happy alone, spinning a light gear on the steep climb that once again saw many riders going backwards or sideways.

Scott and Meredith took to the head of the field to chase Davies down. The pair, only four points apart in the series, monitored each other closely throughout.

The next few laps saw Davies take his lead up to over a minute but that lead would come tumbling down the fifth time up the climb.

Scott, Meredith and Hayden Burton (Bath CC) dragged the field up to the leader, his race now all but done.

With six laps remaining Ben Hardy (Beste Alde La Tostadora) made a move with Tom Chandler (VCUK-PH-MAS) and took to the front of the race and as the race headed towards the top of the circuit, both Pidcock and Scott joined the pair and Hardy was now outnumbered by three VCUK riders.

The rest of the field had to react to the break as Meredith, Burton, Davies, Cameron Orr (SRAM Youth) amongst others went after the leaders but with four laps remaining Scott and Pidcock opened up the engines and took to the front alone.

A select group of some 18 riders formed to chase down. Will Gascoyne (Sherwood Pines Felt Enve) hit the front of the chasers and Chandler was now back in the chase group, trying to upset the pace.

The group still had the series protagonists in. Carl Jolly (Chorley Cycles), Peter Kibble (Velocity Globalbikes), Alfie Moses (HMT with JLT Condor) now with Meredith and Orr amongst others tried to close the gap to the leaders but that gap began to increase as the lap board counted down.

Taking the bell for the final lap, the race was all but over. The lead pair couldn’t be caught and came across the line together, Pidcock taking the win and Scott the series points. Charlie Meredith took the sprint for third from the chase group some 54 seconds down but doing enough to keep the series open till the final round.

Junior women

Rachel Jary (VC Londres) took the win in the junior womens race from a small field that saw only eight riders finish.

Although the first five laps on the top circuit proved to be something of a non-event, the race would take shape once it hit the climb.

The first time up the hill saw the race pretty much together but the severity on the climb once again proved too tough for some riders and they would lose touch with the race.

A break of four had the legs to scamper away on the big circuit. Rachel Jary (VC Londres), Sophia Chastell (Kinetic cycles - Welwyn Racing), Sophie Thackray (Sunspot Velo) and Louise Surridge (Team Ford Ecoboost) worked well to establish the break that wouldn’t be caught.

On the penultimate lap, Surridge dropped her chain as the break came in to the climb, watching the leaders disappear up the hill. It would be too much of a gap to chase back on from the foot of the climb and the Ford Ecoboost rider had to content with fourth place on the day.

The lead three rode sensibly to bring the race down to a sprint that saw Jary just get the better of Chastell whilst Thackray took third.
