UK Anti-Doping is the National Anti-Doping Organisation for the UK, so is the national body responsible for the implementation and management of the UK’s anti-doping policy. UK Anti-Doping’s Mission is to protect the right of athletes to compete in doping-free sport.

100% me is a symbol of an athlete’s effort, commitment and determination to perform at the highest level without a need to dope.

In 2009, UK Anti-Doping inherited testing and education responsibilities from the ‘Drug-Free Sport’ directorate at UK Sport, as well as the case management responsibilities previously carried out by National Governing Bodies (NGBs) such as British Cycling. This has hugely benefitted NGBs as they were formerly responsible for managing cases against athletes, which put them in a position of perceived conflict of interest with their duty to directly support athletes.

Responsible for ensuring sports bodies in the UK comply with the Code, UK Anti-Doping works with a variety of stakeholders, including athletes, to support clean sport. UK Anti-Doping is an intelligence-led organisation that works with athletes and sports to develop and deliver education and information programmes. As well as carrying out testing across more than 40 sports, UK Anti-Doping undertakes intelligence management and is responsible for the prosecution of ADRVs.

What is 100% ME?

100% ME is UK Anti-Doping’s athlete education programme that aims to increase understanding of clean sport and to promote and encourage personal responsibility. 100% me is a symbol of an athlete’s effort, commitment and determination to perform at the highest level without a need to dope. It recognises that choice, personal strength and attitude make someone a champion and instil integrity and fairness in sport. 100% me education is delivered at key events in the sporting calendar, such as the Sainsbury’s School Games, and includes a comprehensive programme of support to athletes competing in major events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Education team works with NGBs to develop anti-doping strategies tailored to their specific sport. It also works with strategic organisations to target key athlete influences, such as parents, coaches and medics, so that all personnel involved in sport understand an athlete’s anti-doping responsibilities.

The 100% ME campaign is about being successful, confident and retaining the values of clean, fair competition. 100% me embodies and celebrates five key values:

• Hard work

• Determination

• Passion

• Respect

• Integrity

These are core principles that are applicable to all athletes and support personnel, from the beginner level right up to the elite athletes. UK Anti-Doping invites all athletes, at every level, to be part of the ‘100% me’ community.

What does the Code say about the spirit of sport values?

A fundamental rationale for the Code is the ‘spirit of sport’, which it describes as the celebration of the human spirit, body and mind. Doping is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport. The Code identifies eleven core values that characterise the spirit of sport, which are correlated to the values of 100% me:

• Ethics, fair play and honesty

• Health

• Excellence in performance

• Character and education

• Fun and joy

• Teamwork

• Dedication and commitment

• Respect for rules and laws

• Respect for self and other participants

• Courage

• Community and solidarity.

An athlete’s anti-doping education

A basic principle of 100% ME is to provide athletes with progressive anti-doping education throughout their career from beginner to elite level. The education should be tailored to the athlete’s performance level and integrated into other elements of their education so that anti-doping becomes part of their lifestyle, rather than an additional concern. Anti-doping education should be drip-fed and reinforced through accurate anti-doping messages from the athlete’s core influences, such as their parents, coaches and medical staff.

In reflecting on this riders should ask themselves what they want to be remembered for:

Do you want to be remembered as the rider who rode fairly, trained hard, respected fellow competitors and so on?

Or do you want to be remembered as the rider who cheated in order to get results? Do you think your reputation would ever recover from that?
