Roger Hammond is back with his Sportive tips for spring and summer and over the next four weeks we’ll be passing these tips on to you, beginning with Roger’s insights into group riding.

If you’ve been ploughing a lonely furrow during your winter training, it can be a bit of a shock suddenly being back in a group of riders during your first sportive of the year. Roger has the following tips:

Week 5

It’s really easy to annoy the other people in a group because you’ve mostly been riding on your own. When you go around a corner you take your own line, you ride at your own speed and when you climb you climb at your own pace and get in and out of the saddle when you want. Then, all of a sudden, you’re riding a sportive and you’re part of a big group.

If you ride in the same way in a group you’ll worry other riders, make them feel unsafe around you and even potentially cause crashes. Spend some time before your first sportive of the season revising essential group riding skills and etiquette which can be found here.

The most important thing though is, just being very, very conscious of everybody around you and, if you are unsure of what to do, just follow the speed and the line of others.
