In this weeks Sportive tip, Roger gives advice on training whilst unwell and knowing when to listen to your body.

Week 3

Knowing how and if to train if you’re feeling under the weather can be hard, fortunately, with fourteen years as a professional, Roger Hammond knows when to listen to his body.

It’s so tempting to train if you get sick, especially if you are building up to an event. You just feel this pressure that you need to ride your bike every day but the reality is that you’re probably not going to do yourself any favours. The sickness is probably an indication that you’ve overdone it anyway, your immune system has taken a battering from training and then your kids or you’ve come in contact with somebody that’s ill and you’ve got no resistance to that sickness. It’s really hard but you’ve just go to try and remember that actually, a few days off to get over a cold quicker is better than to try and train through it. You’ll just prolong it and end up being sick for two weeks instead of just the three or four days it could have taken to get over it. You are better off just biting the bullet, remembering that you won’t lose all of that fitness in a few days and just try and embrace the rest period.
