Oliver James Beckingsale was born on June 7th 1976 in Bristol where he still lives with his wife and two daughters. He is best known as a professional mountain bike rider and represented Great Britain at three consecutive Olympic Games in Sydney, Athens and Beijing.

Oli has also been British Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion on six occasions and also has a Silver medal from the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Five Quick Questions with Oli Beckingsale

When did you start riding?

Oli – I started riding properly in 1988 on a Raleigh Mustang. I took part in my first race a year later at the Cheddar Challenge. I can remember getting round, but I don’t recall where I finished.

What motivates you?

Oli – I’m actually not that competitive, the thing that motivates me is to work hard at something and for it to work and be worthwhile. The other guys I race with are just getting in the way of achieving this.

What in your opinion was the best race of your career?

Oli – Hopefully that is still to come! For me it was the 2005 European Championships, where I finished 6th. I turned up not really expecting much; I had not peaked for the event but was riding really well. During the race I was up in the front group for most of the race, with all the great riders. I ended up only 30 seconds off a podium place at the finish. That result really was a turning point for my ambition in the sport.

Who is your hero?

Oli – Not so much a hero but I have a huge amount of respect for Thomas Frishknecht. I don’t know him well but he’s a great rider and always comes across as a friendly and honest guy.

What advice would you give to a young rider?

Oli – You only get out what you put in. Cycling is a sport with NO shortcuts.
