After a number of Go-Ride sessions had been disrupted by the recent rain, it was great to be back racing as planned for Welland Valley’s Misterton Cross Go-Ride Race, held in the rolling south Leicestershire countryside. A great turnout of 40 keen riders signed on for the event which was held in the grounds of Misterton Hall, near Lutterworth on a sunny Saturday afternoon. This event also formed the first round of the Alden’s Electrical Whizz Kids Racing League, a season long series of events for our young riders.

Our enthusiastic ground crew were at it again to set out a fast circuit around the grounds, which incorporated many of the paths and tracks in the estate, but also utilised the steep fields as well. All riders had two events during the afternoon, the first was the season opening prologue time trial alongside the lake and streams running through the estate. With riders setting off at 20 seconds apart the timekeepers and numbers callers were busy.

In the Under 6’s Jamie Kershaw was the fastest with a time of 1:10 which shows that young Jamie has continued to improve during the winter. Special mention to Holly (aged almost three and a half) who finished the time trial in fourth place on her first start on a “proper” bike having graduated from the balance bike she used last season.

In the Under 8’s Rudy Killworth held off Hal Eastwood for the honours, Madoc Smith was only a couple of seconds adrift in third.  In the Under 10’s it was Edward Hopkins, Fay Garner and Josh Morris, all well under the 1 minute mark while in the Under 12’s it was Matty Garner who finished with the joint fastest time of the day of 45 seconds, followed by Thomas Danvers and Hannah Stewart.

The tightest race of the day was the under 14’s with Fraser Ayears finishing top on 45 seconds, Louis Jakobson one second back, and third Maddie Haywood a mere second behind Louis.  The second event was a longer race. The Under 6’s and Under 8’s raced a shortened version of the course which still had a sharp climb and a tricky decent down the grass slope while the older riders had one lap on the short course and a few more on the much longer course.

In the Under 6’s Jamie Kershaw was the clear winner, followed by Luke Perry in second and Rosie Stewart in third.  The Under 8’s Hal Eastwood held off Rudy Killworth whose late charge for the line wasn’t quite enough on the day. Madoc Smith just held off Hudson Hendry for third.

In the Under 10’s Edward Hopkins held off Oscar McCarthy and Rolph Eastwood to take the honours.  The Under 12’s Matty Garner again came away with the win, followed by James Bradshaw and Eleanor Partridge, Eleanor just getting the verdict over Thomas Danvers in a photo finish despite them both having the same time recorded.

In the Under 14’s Louis Jacobson showed his liking for the longer race with a start-finish victory ahead of Fraser Ayears and Maddie Haywood.

Thank you to Ian for all the results and lap scoring, to British Cycling young volunteers Oliver, Jack and Ross, and to coaches Dean and George for their assistance with the event. Thanks to all the parents who looked after and cheered on the riders, and helped clear the course afterwards. Finally, grateful thanks go to Alden’s Electrical for supporting the racing league again this year, to George Halls Cycle Centre of market Harborough who support Welland Valley Whizz Kids and finally to Mrs Craven for the continued use of her grounds at Misterton Hall.
