Location: Lordship Recreation Ground, Lordship Lane, London
Event: 19 May 2012

Following a successful first ever race in March, it was an even bigger, better second race in mid-May.

The same format of a mass start mountain bike race was applied, and a time trial on the Lordship Loop, a 391m purpose built pump track. As a bonus, the council provided a Dr Bike session, meaning all the competitors had a professional bike check beforehand.

Fortunately, the rain had stayed away for the few days before, and the council even managed to cut the grass during the week, making the mountain bike course faster and certainly much more controllable for the younger competitors.

Based on numbers, it was decided on two mass start events, firstly for the under 8’s and under 10’s, and then for the over 10’s. Some great riding was seen, with the under 8 winner lapping one of the under 10’s on his way to the finish.

Over at the time trial, almost everyone who competed in March showed significant gains this time around. Organiser Kris Kasperkiewicz commented: “I would like to think that a lot of the improvements come from our weekly coaching sessions. As a coach it is heart warming to see the progress and enthusiasm of the kids at these events.

“We already have plans for the next set of races, for end of June, and then for the Go-Ride Games in August, with a greater focus on getting kids from outside of the club to join in.”
