MGRRL: Round 4 Round Up

Posted: 7th June

Round Four of the Manchester Go-Ride Racing League took place at the Tameside Closed Road Circuit on the 4th June as it was the turn of Manchester Triathlon to host a series of exciting races for kids of all ages.

It was the second time the action has taken place in Tameside as the competitors revisited the scene of Round 2, where local Go-Ride Coach Tom Hodgkinson passed on the skills of Time Trialling and Team Time Trialling.

This time, Round Four was all about power and sprinting with all age categories taking on an elimination race, 1km race, 200m bunch sprint, and a two lap Mass Start.

First up was the elimination race; the reasoning behind the elimination race was to help riders understand the importance of riding in the front positions of a bunch, and what riders go through in elite races when the "selection" is made in the finale of a race.

The U10s event saw some amazing rides, with the standout performance going to Ellie Deane, using all the techniques she has built up with Manchester Triathlon to take third place overall in the elimination race and showing the boys how it's done.

The second race was the 1km race, with riders trying to make a positive move within the lap and hitting their race companions with power to make a break for the race win. The U8 race saw William Martindale hitting the front early before the final corner; Kyle Braun tried to follow the great move from William but could not make up the ground made by a great attack. The rest followed in with Joshua Jeffrey's putting in a spectacular effort to win the coveted MGRRL yellow jersey.

In the third race riders were brought to the 250metre line at speed by a pacing rider, at this point riders would try to pick their line through the group and hope it was the line that took them to the front of the pack before the line. The U12 race saw the closest of finishes by all riders, with everyone trying to search for that winning line. It was Carys Harland from Eastland Velo who picked the winning line, closely followed in by the pack with all riders trying to pick off a placing.

Riders were then given the chance to put all their racing experience to the test with a two lap mass start race. The U14/16 race was a tense affair, with all riders tired from their exploits in earlier races.

Manchester Cycle Sport took the front of the race and controlled the pace for a bunch kick, all riders were ready for a bunch gallop with all riders starting the sprints out of the last corner, Daryl Williamson took the front on a hard tail MTB, squeezing Oliver Holmes to the left but ran out of steam just before the line.

Tom Hodgkinson, Go-Ride Coach for Manchester was full of praise for the organising club and the riders that made it out in the school holidays, saying; "it was a great event put on by Manchester Triathlon and supported by all club officials/riders from the league.

"The race day showed that riders all really understanding how to put together their race to their strengths. Also on the day it was great to see a few riders step up and show some aggression to gain better placing within the races and whole event."
