New Go-Ride Club at Cheshire Clarion

Posted: 23rd June

North Cheshire Clarion, Warrington's fastest growing cycling club, is taking another step forward in providing cycling for all with the launch of its brand new Kids Club on Saturday 2nd July 2011 at the Great Sankey Leisure Centre.

Developed under British Cycling's Go-Ride initiative, the North Cheshire Clarion Kids Club will provide structured cycling activities delivered in a traffic-free environment. The summer Saturday sessions will combine fun games, activities and friendly competition for children aged 6 to 15 under the guidance of three coaches qualified under British Cycling's coaching pathway.

The club has been financially supported by Warrington Borough Council, grants from Birchwood MEPC and the National Clarion as well as generous donations from North Cheshire Clarion's hundred plus members.

North Cheshire Chairman Geoff Prince, who is also one of the coaches, said "The Kids Club will allow children over the age of 6 to improve their cycling skills and riding techniques. They'll also be able to compete with each other and, in time, against other kids from across the North West region, we might just discover the next Sir Chris Hoy or Victoria Pendleton!"

Colin Humphreys, Development Manager for Clubs and Volunteers, said: "It's a great to have a new club for young riders in the area that will be able to link up with other North West clubs as the youngsters develop into active cyclists with the potential to compete in the future.

"Cheshire Clarion have worked hard to develop their ethos through moving on to the Go-Ride programme and they are a very welcome addition to the strong cycle sport presence in the North West."

Councillor Kate Hannon said "The Arts and Sports Engagement Team and Warrington Borough Council are happy to support this new cycling initiative through the Sports Grants the council have offered and wish the club every success in its development. It's good to see new sports being brought to the town and it helps bring the community together to get more healthy and active. The Arts and Sports Engagement Team will continue to work with the club to ensure that it goes from strength to strength."

Jonathan Walsh, Managing Director MEPC Birchwood Park said "Birchwood Park has a long history promoting cycling to work and is proud to support North Cheshire Clarion in establishing their kids club. By supporting at the grass roots we can help develop Warrington's cyclists of the future"

The Kids Club will launch at 10.00am on Saturday 2nd July and will be based at Great Sankey Leisure Centre making use of their outdoor facilities as well as those of Great Sankey High School next door.
