There was an excellent turnout of almost 50 riders in picturesque south Leicestershire for Welland Valley CC’s latest Go-Ride Racing event, held in the grounds of Misterton Hall near Lutterworth. This event also formed the final race in the club’s year-long competition, the Alden Electrical/Whizz Kids Racing League.

The ground-staff had been up early and a tight, but reasonably fast circuit had been laid out that incorporated grass, gravel tracks and an uphill woodland section. The young riders had two races today, the first was a short one to three lap event to get the legs moving followed by a second, longer endurance race.

In the first race, a one lap blast, under 6's Jamie Kershaw held off Harrison Hill (Stimpson Ave School) to take the race; followed by George Clark in third. Hannah Henderson was first girl across the line to finish fifth overall. The under 8's ran for 2 laps with George Timmins, Dom Switzer and Huw Wilson taking the podium places and with Fay Garner in fourth and first girl. The under 10's saw Matt Garner, Edward Hopkins and Nicolas Wood battle out for the top places. Nicholas only just made the start line following a delay in getting to the event but put this behind him to claim third. Eleanor Partridge was first girl. In the combined under 12's and under 14's race Louis Jakobson (under 12) took the race honours from Fraser Ayers (first under 14). In the Under 12’s Henry Smith came second just ahead of a battle royal between Jade Mansfield and Rachel Quinney for the first girl, Jade just taking it on the line.

After a short break the starting order was reversed and the older riders set off first with the younger riders feeding into the race in stages. In the under 6 category Harrison Hill (Stimpson Avenue School) and Jamie Kershaw reversed positions from the first leg with Harrison taking the win. George Clarke, who has recently had some excellent results in the West Midlands cross league, came in third. In the under 8’s it was similar to the first leg but Fay Garner improved over the longer distance to take third from Huw Wilson. George Timmins and Dom Switzer again taking the top two places over their five laps. The under 10's raced for six laps and it was a repeat of round one with Matt Garner first; Edward Hopkins second ahead of Nicolas Wood third. The oldest riders (under 12’s and under 14’s) completed eight laps and it was Louis Jakobson taking maximum points in the under 12's, again holding off Fraser Ayres who claimed the under 14 points. Full results are available here.

Thank you to Ian for the results and lap scoring and British Cycing young volunteers Oliver and Jack for their assistance. With this event Oliver should have now completed his hours for his Gold Young Volunteer award. Thanks to all the parents who looked after and cheered on the riders, and helped clear the course and tidied up afterwards. Finally grateful thanks go to Alden Electrical for supporting the racing league this year and to George Halls Cycle Centre who support Welland Valley Whizz Kids and to Mrs Craven for the continued use of her grounds at Misterton.
