British Cycling is delighted to have confirmed a high-profile line-up of international and domestic speakers for Coaching 2012: an annual coaching conference being held at the University of Birmingham in May.

In the year of a home Olympic Games, Coaching 2012 is a unique opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the significant progress made in UK coaching since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Taking place on the 19th May, the conference will deliver a diverse programme of speakers, ensuring that the conference appeals everyone, whether you're a coach, interested in coaching or are a self-coached athlete.

Coaching 2012 will also provide an exciting insight in to British Cycling’s world-leading coach education system for all sports coaches, while the expertise and research interests of our speakers in boxing, football, ultra-running, duathlon, triathlon, climbing and sailing will provide an unparalleled perspective of coaching in the UK today.


Confirmed speakers include:

  • Roger Hammond, Keynote Speaker
    Former nine-time national champion and international pro-cyclist
  • Asker Jeukendrup, Keynote Speaker
    Global Senior Director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute

    Asker is Professor of Exercise Metabolism and the Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Birmingham. He is also a distinguished author and a registered sport and exercise nutritionist, as well as being a competitive Ironman triathlete.

  • Gear Fisher, Analysing Power Files and Planning Trainging: Performance Management
    Co-Founder and CEO of Peaksware

    Peaksware develop software for endurance coaches and athletes to monitor, analyse and plan their fitness and nutrition for peak performance. Peaksware is the company that developed the revolutionary Trainingpeaks and Cyclingpeaks WKO software, as used by Team SKY.  
  • Prof. Kathleen Armour, Keynote Speaker
    Professor of Education and Sport, University of Birmingham

    Kathleen's main research interest is career-long professional learning for teachers and coaches and its impact on young people's learning in physical education and sport.
  • Prof. Andy Lane, 'Emotions and Cycling'
    Professor of Sport and Learning, University of Wolverhampton
    - Andy is a British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Psychologist and British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Accredited Sports Scientist. He is a member of the Emotion Regulation of Others and Self Research Network, investigating emotion regulation in sport and other settings.
  • Dr. Geraint Florida-James, 'Mountain Bike Downhill Performance Analysis'
    Senior Lecturer and Research Co-ordinator, School of Life, Sport and Social Sciences, Napier University
    - Geraint has research interests related to immunological and circadian responses to ultra endurance events and provides scientific support to elite and developing downhill mountain bike racers in the UK.
  • Dr. Mark Griffiths, “Got 6 credits but I haven’t learnt anything”: Engaging sports coaches with professional development
    Lecturer in Sport Pedagogy, University of Birmingham
    - Mark's research interests include sports pedagogy and professional development. He has conducted research funded by the Football Association and Sports Coach UK into these areas.
  • Jayne Ellis, 'Igniting the Fire' – Looking at Paralympic Landscape nationally and internationally
    Senior Paralympic Talent ID Scientist with the UK Sport Talent Team, English Institute of Sport
    - Jayne has considerable experience of coaching cycling at both a grassroots and an elite level, as her roles prior to working for the EIS were as a British Cycling Go-Ride Coach before becoming a Para-Cycling Coach for the Great Britain Cycling Team.
  • Prof. Richard Davison, The use of technology and measurement to inform coaching solutions
    British Cycling Coach Educator, Emeritus Professor at Edinburgh Napier University
    - Richard has numerous published studies into cycling performance and is BASES Accredited for Research and Physiological Sport Science Support. He is a former multiple Scottish time-trial champion.
  • Richard Cheetham, 'Dynamic and creative coaching environments'
    Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching, University of Winchester -
    Richard has contributed to coach education programmes across a wide range of sports and his research interests include sports coaching and development.
  • Lionel Reynaud, 'Aerodynamics and Rider Position'
    A British Cycling Level 3 Road and Time Trial Coach
    - He has worked with the Great Britain Cycling Team, including Bradley Wiggins and the Cofidis Professional Cycling Team. His main interest is coaching with power.
  • Dr. Nikos Ntoumanis, 'Motivation for sport performance, psychological wellbeing and health'
    Reader in Exercise and Sport Psychology, University of Birmingham
    - Nikos' research interests are the psychological experiences of children in sport and in physical education, in particular issues to do with their motivation. He is also interested in the motivation of adults to participate in exercise programmes and goal striving related to weight loss.

It is a list which gives British Cycling’s Coaching and Education Manager, Andrew Gillott, a real sense of satisfaction and excitement for the upcoming event.

“We are very excited to have such an illustrious line-up of international and domestic speakers confirmed for Coaching 2012,” Andrew said. “As one of the leading coaching organisations in the UK, our hope is to provide a diverse programme, which will appeal to high level coaches across a range of sports.

“That is why we sat down and discussed our ‘wishlist’ of leading names within the coaching world when devising the programme for Coaching 2012. These are the people who have shaped modern thinking in their areas of specialisation and I’m absolutely delighted to have received such a positive response from those we have contacted.

“With these contributors in place, we can have confidence that Coaching 2012 will provide keen coaches with a unique opportunity to hear practical and theoretical addresses from those who are leaders in their field. It really is going to be an incredible experience.”
