With two Go-Ride Disability Hubs now up and running in Manchester and Kent, the Go-Ride team are now working in conjunction with other agencies to make sure that disabled riders can access opportunities to cycle for recreation or sport.

The Go-Ride team has been delivering accessible sessions on one Saturday each month at both sites, followed by a para-cycling session for those that want to try their hand at racing or developing their fitness and bike handling techniques.

One of those riders is David Robertson of the Handcycling Association. David spoke to us about his experiences of training and racing.

Hi David. How long have you been cycling?

I am new to handcycling and have been training for about six months now. This includes three of the new para-cycling sessions as part of the British Cycling Disability Hub.

What is it that you enjoy about cycling and these para-cycling sessions?

For cycling in general I like the competitiveness so I want to compete in races. I would also like to see how far I can take my cycling. Hopefully, I can make it on to the Great Britain Cycling Team in the future and compete on the international stage.

With regards to the para-cycling sessions, I like learning and developing my cycling techniques and fitness, specifically bike handling. Because these sessions are on a dedicated cycling circuit with a British Cycling coach, the para-cycling session helps me work towards my goals and meets my needs.

How have these sessions helped you in the short time you have been attending?

I have already noticed a big improvement in my group riding, which has enabled me to get involved in more group rides.

What advice would you give to others looking to get involved in attending para-cycling sessions?

My advice would be to definitely do it because it is really enjoyable and the facilities used in the para-cycling sessions are fantastic.
