Team

Jon-Allan Butterworth joined the Para-cycling Development Programme in 2009 via Help for Heroes’ partnership with British Cycling and the British Paralympic Association to introduce military personnel to Paralympic sport.

In his first international event, the 2011 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, Butterworth set a world record and won a gold medal in the kilo, performances which were followed by three silver medals at the 2012 London Paralympics and further success at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in 2014 and 2016.

The 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, in particular, were a huge success as he joined Jody Cundy and Louis Rolfe to win gold and set a new world record in the team sprint - and the trio carried that form into the Rio Paralympics, winning the team sprint while setting a new world record in qualifying and the final.

Biography

Butterworth joined the RAF in 2002 and served in Afghanistan, in 2005, and Iraq as a weapons technician before losing his left arm below the elbow in a rocket attack at the Basra Air Station in August 2007. Just 10 weeks after having his arm amputated, Butterworth had his first contact with British Cycling coaches, at a Paralympics GB talent ID day in Loughborough and, inspired by the Beijing Olympic Games and the experience of taking part in a Help for Heroes Bike Ride in July 2008, he was selected to the Para-cycling Talent Programme in April 2009.

By August of that year,  Butterworth had left the RAF to focus on his new career and less than two years on that decision was vindicated when he won gold and set a new world record in the C5 kilo at his debut UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy.

There was an identical result for Butterworth in Los Angeles the following year, winning a second consecutive gold medal in the kilo at the 2012 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, an indication that the rider was hitting his stride in time for that summer’s Paralympic Games in London.

Triple triumph in 2012

Those home Games saw Butterworth win silver medals in three events - the kilo, individual pursuit and team sprint - although his frustration at coming so close to gold was compounded when a training crash before the road events hampered his chances of further medals.

In 2014, Butterworth again medalled at the UCI 2014 Para-cycling Track World Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico, winning silver in the kilo and bronze in the individual pursuit, prior to taking a break from competition in 2015.

During his absence from the sport, Butterworth appeared in the Channel 4 reality TV programme “The Jump”, but the lure of another Paralympic Games, in Rio, brought him back to the Great Britain Cycling Team at the end of  2015.

Paralympic gold at last

At the 2016 Para-cycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy, he won silver in the kilo - his fourth world championships medal in that event - before teaming up with Cundy and Rolfe to win gold, beating China in the team sprint final in a new world record time of 49.230.

In Rio, at the 2016 Paralympics, Butterworth rode strongly, just missing out on a medal to finish fourth in the kilo before joining Rolfe and Cundy for the team sprint. The trio qualified fastest, in a new world record time, to reach the gold medal ride against China.

The British team rode superbly in the final, winning by over a second in a new world record time of 48.635.

Two years later, there was further success for Butterworth in Brazil, as he reunited with Cundy and Rolfe to take team sprint gold at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.

Butterworth also added silver in the 1km time trial - the fifth occasion in his career when he reached the podium in the kilo at the world championships.
