Biography

In January 2016, Emily was called to represent Great Britain in the final round of the 2015/16 UCI World Cup Series in Hong Kong. Emily put in a strong debut performance, helping the GB team win silver in the team pursuit as well as winning an individual medal, taking bronze in the points race.

Following success in Hong Kong, Nelson was called up to the Great Britain Cycling Team squad for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London, finishing fifth in the points race on her world championships debut.

Nelson won two medals at both the senior and under-23 European championships, winning gold and silver in the under-23 event in the team pursuit and points race respectively, before winning bronze and silver in the team pursuit and Madison in Paris in the senior championships.

Nelson then won her first senior world-level gold medal in the opening round of the 2016/17 UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Glasgow as part of the successful British team pursuit quartet, before claiming a silver medal in the omnium in the third round in Colombia.

Those performances earned Nelson a second world championships selection - named as part of the Great Britain Cycling Team for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong in April 2017, where she was part of the endurance squad that finished fifth in the team pursuit before winning silver in the Madison with Elinor Barker.

Nelson followed that up with her first individual gold medal, winning the under-23 elimination race at the 2017 UEC Junior and Under-23 Track European Championships in Portugal.

She continued her good form in 2017, winning silver and bronze in the opening round of the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Poland before claiming team pursuit gold in Manchester one week later.

Nelson was named in the Great Britain Cycling Team squad for the 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn - winning her second world championships silver medal as part of a five-woman team pursuit squad alongside Laura Kenny, Katie Archibald, Ellie Dickinson and Barker.

Her week got even better as she won her first world title alongside Archibald in the Madison - the pair dominating the race and winning a sensational eight sprints in a row on their way to gold.
