About Steven

Steven followed in his mother’s footsteps to become a track cyclist, taking to the boards when he was just 14 years old.

Another young talent to rise up through the ranks of the British Cycling Team Olympic Programmes, Steven’s cycling skills span all areas.

Steven Burke made his mark on the world stage during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing where he won bronze in the individual pursuit. Burke was on top form in the ride-off for bronze medal, beating his pre-Olympic personal best by 11 seconds.

Although absent in qualifying, Burke was part of the world record breaking squad in the team pursuit final in the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne. Steven went on to replicate this success with his team mates (Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas and Peter Kennaugh) on the Olympic stage, winning the team pursuit gold medal and breaking the world record once more.

In the 2013 New Years Honours list, Steven was awarded an MBE for his services to cycling.

At the 2013 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Belarus, Steven won the silver medal in the team pursuit, alongside Ed Clancy, Sam Harrison and Andy Tennant. Steven went on to become the European team pursuit champion in 2013 with Ed Clancy, Owain Doull and Andy Tennant. The same four riders went on to win the team pursuit at the World Cup in Manchester just a couple of weeks later.

At the second round of the UCI Track World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Steve, along with Owain Doull, Sam Harrison and Jon Dibben, won the bronze medal after comfortably catching New Zealand in the bronze-medal ride.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Steve won the silver medal for England in the team pursuit alongside Sir Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy and Andy Tennant.

In the opening round of the 2014/15 UCI Track World Cup series in Mexico, Steve won the silver medal in the team pursuit and in the second round, which took place in London, he won the gold medal.

In January 2015, Steve broke his collar bone during a training ride in Majorca but thanks to the support staff at British Cycling he recovered in time to win silver in the men's team pursuit event at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Paris, a huge improvement on the team's previous performance in Colombia the year before where they finished 8th.

Burke began the 2015/16 season brightly with gold in the team pursuit at the UEC European Track Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland. At the 2016 UCI Track World Championships in London, he formed part of the team pursuit squad who won the silver medal.
