Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish has returned to the top three of the Pro Cycling Index after winning the Belgium semi classic race Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne.
Cavendish, riding for Team Sky, is the first rider to win the race in the world champion’s jersey since Johan Museeuw in 1997 and if able to maintain his form in the spring classics period could close the gap or even overtake Cadel Evans in second place.
After the race Cavendish paid tribute to his teammate Chris Sutton, who led him out having won the event in 2011. “We had last year’s winner leading me out in CJ [Sutton] and for him to sacrifice the chance of going for a double, shows the class he has. That was great and for Team Sky to win it two years in a row is very, very nice,” Cavendish said.
Fellow British and Team Sky rider Bradley Wiggins also finds himself in the top 10, sitting in eigth position after a strong Tour of the Algarve.
The IG Markets Pro Cycling Index, a different system to the UCI’s rankings, sources results from the 120 top international road races throughout the season. Races are ranked based on their prestige and their importance to cycling fans and put into four tiers in three different categories.
