Great Britain's Grant Ferguson crashed out of round four of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Albstadt, Germany on a tortuous second day of competition.

The British champion and Scottish Commonwealth Games medal hope was in the lead group of three on the opening lap of the under-23 race and crashed heavily on the descent.

He was then taken to hospital for x-rays to ascertain his condition, all of which later came back clear.

Iain Paton was the top British squad finisher on the day in 41st. The result was far below his 23rd position in Nove Mesto the week previous, however the course was far tighter in Albstadt making overtaking from a grid of 78 a slow task.

Kenta Gallagher had been running in 35th place, but a puncture on lap three, followed by a stop in the pits cost him over two minutes and a finishing position of 63rd.
