An excellent fourth place for Simon Yates was the highlight of an indifferent day for Great Britain at the second stage of the 2013 Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

The British Cycling Olympic Academy rider was joined by Richard Lang in the top ten as the two came home in the peloton along with Graham Briggs (39th), Lang’s seventh place coming on the back of tenth position in the previous day’s stage.

Academy riders Alistair Slater and Sam Lowe were forced to retire after two incidents in the peloton early on in the 146.6km journey from Mitchelton Winery outside Nagambie to Healesville, competed in friendlier conditions than the soaring heat which riders endured on stage one.

A crash in Seymour 25km into the stage split the peloton before a second crash shortly after saw an additional two riders abandon the race. With Chris Latham retiring from the race for GB in stage one, it leaves just Yates, Lang and Briggs for Sunday’s final stage from Peppers Moonah Links Resort to Arthurs Seat Summit.

Twenty-one year old Luke Davison took the stage win from a breakaway formed with 60km remaining, eventually whittled down to two riders, Aaron Donnelly keeping his general classification lead.

The Sun Tour concludes on Sunday with a 93km stage from Moonah Links to Arthurs Seat.
