Brailsford and Garner take BBC East Midlands Sports Awards


British Cycling's Performance Director Dave Brailsford and British Cycling Olympic Development Programme athlete Lucy Garner were winners at the recent BBC East Midlands Sports Awards.

Brailsford picked up Coach of the Year following a season which included five medals at the road World Championships and the emergence of a new era in women's team pursuiting - in which Dani King and Laura Trott secured both European and World Championships.

Garner was another of Britain's World Champions, taking the junior road race title on her first attempt. It was a breakout performance by the 17-year-old, who progressed from cyclo-cross, to producing a strong domestic road season, before taking the result of her career.

The BBC's regional awards serve as a precursor to the annual Sports Personality of the Year, with nominees announced on November 28 and the ceremony and public vote on December 22.
