It was two top ten finishes for the Great Britain Cycling Team on day two of the UCI Road World Championships in Imola on Friday.

Geraint Thomas finished in fourth place, just 37.02 seconds behind his Ineos Grenadiers team mate Fillipo Ganna, who won the rainbow jersey in a time of 35:54.10 on the 31.7km course. Alex Dowsett finished in nineth place, 1 minute 6.38 seconds behind the winner.

Geraint said: “It was good, I felt strong out there, I had to attack it with the head wind out and the tail wind back. I didn’t have my Garmin so I didn’t know exactly what I was doing but I think I paced it relatively well. I struggled on the way back to stay really focussed – when you have the numbers there its easier just to sit there and focus on that so I was falling a sleep a bit there, but it’s no excuses, I wouldn’t have won with or without a Garmin, obviously a medal was close but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

The championships continue tomorrow with the elite women’s road race.
