Pidcock just beaten to Cyclo-Cross World Cup podium

Tom Pidcock came within a whisker of a podium place at the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup in Switzerland.

Teenager Pidcock, the European and World junior Cyclo-Cross champion, went toe-to-toe with his rivals in the U23 event in Bern but had to settle for fourth in the end.

It was the first Telenet UCI Radquer World Cup in Switzerland for eight years, with fans treated to terrific series of Sunday clashes.

Pidcock just shy of podium

Pidcock was the Brit who came nearest to troubling the medal positions on the day as he battled to fourth in the U23 men’s competition.

Nineteen-year-old Pidcock, who also has superb pedigree on the road and is the 2017 world junior time trial champion, finished the eight-lap course in 49:12, nine seconds adrift of Antoine Benoist of France, who claimed bronze.

Belgian Eli Iserbyt took the glory on the day in a dominant time of 48:31, 27 seconds ahead of another French rider, Eddy Fine sealed silver.

Fellow Brit Daniel Tulett ended the day 33rd.

Battling Wyman best placed in women’s race

In the women’s elite contest, Helen Wyman was the highest-placing of the British challengers as she managed 18th.

Dutch legend Marianne Vos, a seven-time world Cyclo-Cross champion stormed to glory in 41:00 ahead of compatriot Annemarie Worst, who was nine seconds adrift.

Katherine Compton of the United States completed the podium positions, rolling over the line 13 seconds behind Worst.

Wyman finished in 42:18, while two other Brits were in action in the women’s race – Emily Wadsworth, competing under her club banners of TP Racing coming home in 48th while Nikki Brammeier did not finish.
