Evie Richards produced a grandstand finish to claim second in the UCI Cyclocross World Cup race at Jingle Cross in a thrilling topsy-turvy race.

The 21-year-old, who won Commonwealth Games silver on the Gold Coast this year, powered through on the final lap to make the podium – while USA’s Katie Keough won and Holland’s Marianne Vos finished third.

The heavens opened before the race, making conditions difficult for riders, but Vos stormed out of the blocks and led at the end of the first lap from Eva Lechner, Sophie de Boer, Keough and Richards.

Lechner took the lead from Vos but the Dutch rider crashed on the second, allowing Keough to race clear from the chasing group.

The American disappeared into the distance, leaving a frantic fight for second – which Richards looked unlikely to achieve after being forced to swap her bike.

However, she put the hammer down in a furious chase at the end, surging through for second to also retain the under-23 leaders jersey while Vos recovered to take third.
