Alex Coleborn and Charlotte Worthington’s maiden Great Britain Cycling Team experiences rounded off in encouraging style with a pair of sixth-place finishes in the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup.

The duo were breaking new ground in Hiroshima and certainly put in performances from which they can build on, with Coleborn leading after the semi-final stage.

But they were not the only two into the final as Jack Clark competed on the last day in Japan, holding on to round out the top ten.

Agonising wait doesn’t fall Coleborn’s way

Qualifying in top spot with a score of 84.37 had put Coleborn in good stead following the semi-final, ensuring the Brit was the last to go as Sunday’s finale drew to a close.

Unlike his heat the first run was not quite his clinical best but the second certainly showed glimpses of the form that saw him become 2017 UCI Urban Cycling world silver medallist.

Nervously waiting to see if he could secure a place on the podium, it wasn’t to be this time, scoring 81.60, unable to break the top three.

Brandon Loupos caused a slight surprise with top spot having been the first to compete, the Australian’s effort of 92.10 points was comfortably the best, with Kenneth Tencio and Daniel Dhers rounding off the podium.

And there was also a top-ten finish for Clark, despite the 23-year-old not quite being able to put his perfect runs together, sitting in tenth place at the end of competition thanks to his 75.50 score.

Worthington revels in maiden World Cup final

Never before had Worthington been involved in a World Cup final but she showed herself adept to the occasion as she stepped up to the level in a tough medal battle.

Scoring 63.80 in her qualifier, she took that up a level in the final to score 72.20 second time around to sit in sixth position come the finale.

But as the 21-year-old upped her game so did the rest of the field, the winner Hannah Roberts scoring 84.70 for the United States, ahead of compatriot Angie Marino.

Third went to 18-year-old Lara Lessmann while Nina Buitrago was in fourth place, less than one point ahead of Worthington who certainly impressed in the new surroundings.

The next stop of the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup tour will come in Montpellier, France, next month, before heading to Edmonton, Budapest and Chengdu.
