Great Britain Cycling Team’s Hannah Barnes took 14th in the elite women’s time trial in extremely hot conditions at the UCI Road World Championships in Qatar.

Barnes set the early pace over the 28.9km course, leading after the first wave of riders in a time of 39:00.37.

The title, and the rainbow jersey, went to USA’s Amber Neben in 36:37.04, with Barnes’ British team-mate Hayley Simmonds finishing 25th.

Hannah Barnes, who became national road race champion earlier this year, set off at a blistering pace, eventually overtaking two riders who had begun their efforts before her.

Barnes, who held on to the leader’s hot seat for the early stages of the day, said she enjoyed her time trial run in the searing Doha heat.

“For me, that was pretty good. My target was to try and get the fastest time in my seed, so I’m pretty happy to have achieved that.

“It was pretty hard to pace it out there because of the heat. It was good, a really nice introduction to what Saturday (women’s road race) will bring.”

British time trial champion Simmonds completed the course in 40:24.22 – and admitted she was disappointed with her performance.

“I truly, truly believe that I am capable of being up there in this event. I really do and I’m really really upset that I’m currently not showing that.

“I felt really good in training the last few days and then today, three minutes in, the wind was hot and I just couldn’t do the numbers.”

The American rider Neben held off the challenge of Netherlands’ Ellen Van Dijk to claim the gold by six seconds – the 41-year-old winning her second time trial world title, eight years after claiming her first.

Australia’s Katrin Garfoot completed the podium, finishing a further two seconds behind Van Dijk.
