Jess Roberts and Tao Geoghehan Hart were the top finishers for the Great Britain Cycling Team on the first day of competition at the UEC European Road Championships.

Roberts finished fourth in the junior women's time trial and Geoghehan Hart ninth in the under-23 men's event.

Junior time trials

The first event of the UEC European Road Championships was the junior women’s time trial.

Great Britain Cycling Team had two riders in the competition; Henrietta Colborne and Jessica Roberts. Roberts had already tasted success on the world stage in 2016, winning silver in the UCI Juniors Track World Championships points race.

Colborne was the 12th rider of the 41 entrants to take to the course and came home in 19:49, taking the lead at that stage in the competition.

After 29 riders had finished, Colborne was still on the podium in the bronze medal position behind Alessia Vigilia of Italy and Russia’s Mariia Novolodskaia.

Roberts, who was the 34th rider to set off down the start ramp, set a time five seconds quicker than her team mate and held the third spot on the podium, with six competitors still to finish.

In the end, Roberts was edged into fourth place by a strong ride by Juliette Labous of France, whose time of 19:24 was 20 seconds faster than the time set by Roberts.

Colborne’s time saw her finish inside the top 10 in seventh place, while the gold and silver both went to Italy; Lisa Morzenti and Vigilia respectively.

Fred Wright and Ethan Hayter were the British representatives in the junior men’s time trial.

Hayter’s time put him just outside of the top 10, finishing 11th and just one minute slower than eventual winner, France’s Alexys Brunel, in 36:58.

Wright was one of the first riders in the 51-strong field to depart the starting ramp and put in a good effort to finish the 25.4km course in 39:16 in 35th place.
