Over 50 Great Britain Cycling Team Apprentices will take part in an Apprentice world cup at the Derby Velodrome from 19-20 March.

The two days of coach-led racing offers the sprint and endurance riders a rare experience of the pressures of a competition scenario but with a focus on development.

The Apprentices involved are part of British Cycling’s Rider Route, which helps the most promising riders become the stars of world and Olympic cycling.

Aged from 14-15, the riders will be split into teams and ride over two days in a format similar to a UCI Track Cycling World Cup event. The event gives Apprentices an opportunity to ride in events that are not frequently available in the regular youth season, such as the team pursuit and team sprint.

A key aspect of the event is the feedback and review of performances. Riders will spend time off the bike watching video footage and evaluating their efforts alongside Great Britain Cycling Team Foundation Coaches.

Junior academy endurance coach Monica Eden said: "As a coach I’m looking for the youth riders to commit wholeheartedly to each event across the weekend.

"Each event is an opportunity to learn, improve and ultimately become a better bike rider. So no matter what the event they should be driving hard all the way to the finish line.

"I would also like to see riders challenge themselves tactically and be brave enough to try to win an event in a new way."

Great Britain Cycling Team performance pathway manager Ian Yates added: "The Apprentice World Cup is a unique opportunity and a fantastic platform for our young riders' development.

"They'll enjoy being in a racing environment (especially those that are first past the line!) but our main priority is to ensure they learn from the experience, in terms of how they prepared for the weekend, how they did in each race, and where they can improve."
