Great Britain Cycling Team’s young riders added two more medals to the haul on the final day of action at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cambridge, New Zealand.

Chris Latham took silver in the omnium after a consistent weekend of riding, while the pair of Mark Stewart and Germain Burton won bronze in the Madison – despite Burton suffering a big crash mid-race.

Latham came into Sunday’s racing as the overnight leader in the omnium, but with Danish rider Lasse Norman Hansen only a couple of points behind.

The first omnium event of the day was the kilometre time trial, with Latham posting a time of 1:04.215 to finish tenth – with Hansen finishing fourth to regain the lead.

A seventh place finish in the flying lap in 13.286 put Latham just two points behind Hansen going into the final event, the points race.

Both Latham and Hansen took laps to claim 20 points, but the Dane dominated the sprints, picking up five points on five separate occasions to claim the gold on 208 points, with Latham impressive in second place, just 20 points behind.

Latham said: “I've been knocking on the door waiting for that opportunity and sadly Ed (Clancy) was going to do this (omnium) but he's had a back injury so I've jumped in and took the opportunity.

“It’s massive, a real big performance. First world cup (of the season) and to get a silver, well happy with that, I'm delighted.

In the madison, Germain Burton suffered a big crash during a mid-race sprint but didn’t allow the fall to affect his performance.

Partnering Mark Stewart, gold medallist in the scratch race on Saturday, the pair were consistent throughout the madison, picking up second place in half of the eight sprints to take third place on 13 points.

Burton said: “We're really pleased to be racing here at the world cup in New Zealand. We've both had decent form so we were really looking forward to getting stuck into the madison after getting fifth in the team pursuit yesterday. We were coming into it wanting to go for the win but bronze, we're pretty happy with.”

Earlier in the day, Emily Kay finished her first world cup omnium in 15th place after a strong performance in the points race where she was among four riders to take a lap.

Emily Nelson finished an encouraging tenth in the scratch race – her first individual world cup ride.
