Great Britain’s Owain Doull finished seventh overall after a seventh place finish on the final stage of the UCI Under 23 Nations’ Cup ZLM Roompot Tour in the Netherlands on Saturday.

Doull and teammate Jon Dibben made the critical selection toward the end of the stage as the Danish team sewed up a perfect two days of racing with a stage win for Mads Petersen and overall victory for Soren Kragh Andersen.

Stage two saw riders tackle a 177.2-kilometre parcours starting and finishing in Goes. The stage traversed much of Zeeland, crossing into the neighbouring province of Noord Brabant and featuring a number of climbs and cobbled sectors.

As in the previous stages, wind played its part, the race fracturing into a number of groups as it negotiated Zeeland’s islands and peninsulas, before heading for the finishing circuit in Goes, which riders completed three times.

Continuing an impressive weekend of riding, Doull and Dibben made the leading group of around 16 riders that swelled to 24 as the race reached its climax on the finishing circuit.

But with five riders from the Denmark in the group it was difficult for Great Britain or other nations to assert control, Mads Petersen going on to take the sprint ahead of countryman Michael Carbel Svengaard and Norway’s Daniel Hoelgaard.

Owain Doull crossed the line five seconds back in seventh, with Dibben two places back in ninth on the same time.

Chris Latham was 51st, two minutes and 23 seconds down while Oliver Wood, Germain Burton and Mark Stewart did not finish, just three of a host of riders who were forced to abandon.

The result left Doull in seventh on the final general classification, one minute and 37 seconds behind Andersen, with Dibben in eighth, two seconds further back.

The stage completed a clean sweep for the Danes, with Soren Kragh Andersen winning stage one and the team securing victory in the team time trial.

Finishing fourth on the stage, Kragh Andersen wrapped up the yellow jersey while fellow Dane Mads Wurtz Schmidt took the combativity prize. The team classification also went to Denmark, with Great Britain finishing seventh.

The UCI Under 23 Nations’ Cup resumes on 29-31 May with the Course de la Paix in the Czech Republic.
