British Cycling has today welcomed the news that Great Britain Para-cycling Team member Dame Sarah Storey has been nominated for a prestigious Laureus award.
The Laureus World Sports Awards recognise outstanding performance by sportsmen and women from across the globe and this year will be held in Shanghai, China on 15 April.
Storey, who has been shortlisted for the ‘World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability’ award, has enjoyed a remarkably dominant sporting career and was able to return to world-class competition after giving birth to her daughter, Louisa, in June 2013.
The season of 2014 saw Dame Sarah continue her success, winning four world titles in both road and track disciplines.
Storey is now focused on targeting the Hour Record which she will tackle on the 28 February at the Lee Valley Velopark in London followed by defending her world championship titles on the track in Apeldoorn at the end of March.
Speaking of her nomination, Dame Sarah said: "It's a huge and unexpected honour to be nominated for this award.
“Making a comeback after a year out to have Louisa was always the plan but I never expected how much stronger I would become and it's been a huge honour to be able to continue to win gold medals for Great Britain and as a result get nominated for this prestigious award. Many thanks to everyone who supports me, my success is a team effort."
British Cycling president Bob Howden said: “At British Cycling, we are extremely proud of Dame Sarah not only for her achievements on the bike but also the exemplary attitude she displays off it. Sarah is a true ambassador of the sport of cycling and thoroughly deserves this nomination.
“On behalf of British Cycling, we wish Sarah the best of luck at the Laureus World Sports Awards and in her future endeavours.”
Responding to the news, 11-time Paralympic gold medallist Baroness Grey-Thomson said: "I am absolutely delighted that Sarah has been nominated for a Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability award.
"Sarah is an amazing ambassador for disability sport. The calibre of nominations is particularly high this year which is wonderful to see and shows that Paralympic sport is in good shape."
