These sessions consist of Welsh Cycling Sprint Talent Development Centres and the U12 and Improvers sessions. 

Aimed at U12 and Improvers

They are specifically tailored for U12 riders and U14s/U16s who may have limited track experience. If you're uncertain about your suitability for these sessions, please email Owen.Thomas@newportlive.co.uk.

These sessions focus on developing a rider's track confidence by focusing on the technical, physical, and tactical aspects necessary for competitive racing.

 

Sprint Talent Development Centre

The Welsh Cycling Talent Development Centre for Sprint is open to all Youth A, B and Junior riders. These sessions will focus on training for the different sprint events.

These training sessions concentrate on honing skills for various sprint events. The knowledge and abilities gained in these sessions will prove valuable to any track rider, regardless of whether their primary focus is sprinting or endurance riding.

About the Event

Info for Riders

Entry Standards:

Technical: 

  • Demonstrates that riders check their correct shoulders at least 80% of the time that they move.
  • Riders can comfortably ride on the blue line whilst under fatigue for the duration of a block. 
    - Approximately 15 minutes per block. 
  • Be able to ride within a quarter wheel length distance away from the rider in front of you when on the stayer’s 
    line.
  • Confidently change from the front to the back of line within the either of the banking’s. 
    - To be completed from the blue line.
    - A minimum of 6 riders required in the line.
  • Riders can consistently ride in a stack of 4 and be able to move from either the bottom to top or top to bottom of 
    the stack.
    - All 4 riders in the stack must be below the blue line.
  • To be able to ride in pairs on the blue line and change from the front and manoeuvre to the back.
    - Riders remaining 1m apart for the duration of the lap. 
    - Riders remain next to each other on the change.
  • To be able to ride one handed for the duration of a banking. 
    - Able to complete this with each hand and be able to demonstrate you can do this irrespective of hand position on the handlebars.
  • To be able to weave from the back to the front of a moving group that has space in between each rider. 
    - The gaps between each rider needs to be a minimum of 2 bike lengths.
  • Riders can complete lumps and bumps activity in a small group with 2 to 3 bike length gaps between riders.
    - Up early in banking from black to above  blue, black coming out of bank, above blue 
    in straight and continue. 

Physical

  • Be able to complete an interval block, lasting between 5 to 10 minutes. 
    - e.g. long pyramids (1 on, 1 off, 2 on, 2 off, continue up and return down). 
  • Riders able to repeatedly complete a “Taking half lap” to a group riding half a lap apart.
    - A minimum of 3x efforts. 
    - Efforts to be completed individually. 
  • Riders able to complete a flying 200m effort from the top of the track.
    - This should be 3.5 laps total
  • Riders able to complete a 10-lap scratch race. 
  • Riders can complete a 15-lap points race.
    – Sprints every 5, 3 sprints total)

Additional Requirements 

  • Riders turn up to the session with appropriate riding kit. 
    - Lycra, Mitts, Helmet and Shoes. 
  • Riders appropriately fuel for each session. 
    - Turning up to sessions with a water bottle which holds at least 500ml fluids.
    - Eating snacks consistently throughout the session. 
  • To be able to ride the rollers for 10 minutes consecutively with support for starting and stopping.
