Event Overview
The North Pennines is known as the Roof of England, as it features England's highest climb and England's two highest mountain passes. If you haven't visited the area before, this really is an undiscovered cycling gem!
This is The Winking Sheep's 5th year, and its set to be the best yet as we have introduced THE RAM course! With 112 miles and over 13,100ft of ascent - this is a challenge that commands respect.
2019 courses
'The Ram' 112 mile course with over 13,100ft of ascent is our elite course. Compared to the Fred Whitton in the Lake District, this is about 2 miles less, but 100 metres more in ascent. In addition to the 90 mile course, The Ram includes a breath-taking descent down 'The Riddler', a thigh burning ascent over The Great Southern Drove road (passing The Weardale Ski Club) and then the grand finale - Up and down England's highest mountain pass, with a 2 mile freewheel descent with panoramic views to the finish line. https://www.strava.com/routes/16314925
'The Winking Sheep' 90 mile course with nearly 9000ft ascent is difficult, and it's meant to be! After 75 miles of course, you'll be welcomed by the thigh burning 25% slope climb from Westgate that we have named ‘The Riddler’ after a local rider named Stephen Riddle tragically passed away after a short illness March 2017. Stephen’s partner became an Event Organiser to support the event in Stephen’s memory. https://www.strava.com/routes/13896579
