5 Valleys Gran Fondo (79 miles & 40 Miles  - 2 Routes)

This is the inaugural year of the Stroud, 5 Valleys Grand Fondo: a picturesque and challenging 79 mile route around this scenic part of the Cotswolds or a less challenging 40 mile route

Route A - bit.ly/5ValleysGranFondo

The route starts at Brimscombe School in the golden valley, three miles South of Stroud in Gloucestershire. It first meanders North, following the old Thames and Severn Canal before heading out through the traditional villages of Miserden and Coberley then into the rolling wolds and dry stone walls of Laurie Lee country.  The course then begins to loop round and head West taking the ‘top o’ the world’ road near Painswick with far  reaching views of the Severn Valley and beyond to the black mountains of South Wales. Now heading South, the course descends back into the old mill town Stroud,  out to the  village of Frocester then  up the iconic Frocester Hill.

The route then follows the Cotswold escarpment before winding down to the village of Uley and a stiff climb up Lampern Hill.

Here the landscape changes to the peaceful lanes and farmland around Ozleworth and Chevenage House before passing through the medieval  Cotswold Market town of Tetbury.  The final section takes you East through quiet lanes to the old villages of Rodmarton, Tarlton and Cherrington. There is a long descent from Avening to Nailsworth and the ride finishes with a tough climb up the  W’s (another iconic hill beloved of local cyclists) which takes you  up and onto the grass commons of Minchinhampton before back  down to finish back at the school for a warm welcome, a well- earned pint of Stroud Brewery Beer and something off the BBQ.

With a little over 2000 metres of climbing in  79 miles this is a challenging route; However, one planned to give you the best this area of outstanding Natural Beauty has to offer.  This is a non-profit sportive with all proceeds going to support Brimscombe Primary School.

Route B

If you would prefer something slightly less challenging but equally picturesque then there is the option of  a medium distance ride  of 65km (40mile)  with approximately 1,400m of climbing. It follows the route of the longer ride for the first 35 miles to the top of Frocester hill then splits and heads back towards Brimscombe via Nympsfield,  Nailsworth, up the W's to Tom's Long Post and back to the start.

Family Ride

Later in the afternoon there is a 15  mile organised family friendly, traffic free cycle ride. This route also starts at the school and follows the canal cycle track into Stroud and beyond before looping back. It is all flat with plenty of places to stop and prizes for all finishers.

Both events have been organised to finish at the school’s summer fair with refreshments, live music and lots of fun activities.
