Event Summary

Event Overview

This page is information for Sportive riders only.

Wallingford Festival of Cycling will be one of the biggest cycling events of 2017 and offers a unique chance to combine a great sportive with watching some top-class racing.

Our 50km and 110km road sportives offer a chance to ride some of Oxfordshire’s finest country roads and punchy climbs through the natural rollercoaster of the Chiltern Hills.

The year’s event features a UK first as we host both the National Junior Men and Junior Woman’s Road races, with both events finishing on a closed road, town centre circuit, which will also feature a full programme of criterium racing.

Sportive riders can leave their bikes in our secure bike park and explore all the festival offers including something for every level of cyclist, children’s festival, family rides, HGV safety display, pump track and lots of stalls with anything to do with bikes and health.

More information:  www.wallingfordfestivalofcycling.co.uk, follow us on Twitter @wfocycling or https://www.facebook.com/wallingfordfestivalofcycling/

We are a not for profit event with any surplus going to support Team Vision Innovative Leisure or cycling coaching for local children. We thank Wallingford Town Council, the people of Wallingford, South Oxfordshire District Council and Oxfordshire County Council for being wonderful hosts. The programme starts at 8:00 am and finishes at 6 pm. See our website for details of hotels, campsites and B&B's.

The Sportives will explore the amazing Chilterns including several great ascents and descents plus a water and food stop. These events are supported by a broom wagon and finishers will get a goodie bag and will be able to download a certificate. After the ride we have free secure bike parking for you to enjoy the rest of festival.

The 110km sportive is a challenging course with just over 4000ft of climb.  It is suitable for the regular cyclist who welcomes some climbs that will fully test their legs.

The course heads into the Chilterns an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  It includes quiet country lanes, the historic market town of Henley on Thames and the iconic climbs of Oxford Road to Cobstone Mill as featured in the film of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Watlington Hill where red kites can be seen to soar.

The 50km route offers gentler gradients and is more suitable for those new to cycling who relish the challenge of a Sportive.  As the route follows the 110km route for the first 23km it allows you to begin your cycle with those doing the longer route.  The main climb of the route takes you from South Stoke up to Woodcote but offers slopes of no more than 8 %.  After a welcome feed station at Stoke Row you are soon rewarded with a welcome descent down Nuffield Hill before a ride through the picturesque village of Ewelme known for its Watercress beds and the oldest school in the United Kingdom before re-joining the 110km route for the final 8km.

Notes for both routes: This year we host the National Junior Road Races which offers our Sportive riders an unrivalled opportunity to see the race peloton go past in the last two miles of your ride. If you are time conscious and want to finish without potential interruption pick an early start time. Start times are available between 8am and 9 am going off every 15 minutes. This year we are setting off both 50 km and 110 km in the same batch to allow friends/couples to ride off together before the route splits at 23 km.

Photos of some of the picturesque scenes you will see are available on our website.
