Malvern Cycle Sport MTB Challenge

MTB XC , LEDBURY – Sunday, 19 Mar 2017

Event Summary

Event Overview

Fantastic old skool mtb race in the iconic race location of Eastnor Park. Presented by the superb local club of Malvern Cyclesport, including backing from Worcester Cycle Centre. All categories, but with two very special memorial races, dedicated to Charlie van der Craig and local rider, Paul Kirby. We are delighted to also by courtesy of Jez Avery and his Hot Pies gang, to be bringing back the legendary Bunnyhop competition. This will be a fun event and free to enter, but with a hope of making a little cash for our chosen charity and all donations will be greatly received.

Please support our non profit making grass roots event and come to remember these two tragically lost athletes, and do them proud. We are now giving all proceeds from the XC, the Bunnyhop Comp and #rideforcharlievandercraig Road Sportive, which will run alongside the mtb to a charity chosen by the Craig family.

Eastnor Park has a fantastic historical herritage in mountain bike racing going back to 1989. It has been home to many National Events, including two National Championships and National Points Series too. Then in addition it was home for many years to the iconic Malvern Classic.  More of late, the venue was used for countless times for the Mountain Mayhem 24 hour events too.

On the back of this heritage, we have decided to run a pre '99 retro race for all bikes and kit made before that time. Again, this is a fun event, but with a competitive edge and we will be awarding on the spot prizes for effort with 'old skool' bikes and kit used. This particular race will be in memory of local rider, Paul Kirby who raced in Eastnor Park many times back in the day.

The other most sensitive race will be the Youth Race, which will be dedicated to the traggic loss of Charlie Craig.

In designing the 3 mile course, our local course expert will bring back many of the old original features, inc the legendary Bombhole, The Catchout, Cannondale Ridge to name a few. Then we have a new course feature in that we have The Deers Leap Bridge which will be very kindly sponsored by the boys at Avon Scaffolding. The race will be run on a mixture of grass, firetrack and some single track too and will include some of the very famous Land Rover test tracks, with testing climbs on proper old skool, non artificial terrain . As the race is in March, a focus on 'all weather rideability' will be crucial and this will be reflected in the final course route design.
