LanKyTours.uk present the  3 RIVERS CLASSIC

17th April 2016

Distance 93.5km

Elevation gain 1542m

HQ Edisford Primary School Clitheroe BB72LN

The LankyTours 3 Rivers Classic opens our timed sportive trilogy. This sportive packs a punch! Just like the early season continental races the 3 Rivers Classic is punctuated with 13 significantly steep ‘Classic’ climbs. We recommend a minimum of 39 x 28. To complete the full course you will have average a 100ft of climbing per mile. The climbs start early rising sharply up from the River Hodder. They will relentlessly reveal themselves to you as the route weaves its way in, out and up three of Lancashire most majestic river valleys.

Weather dependent you will be able to get a 360® panorama on the top of Jeffrey Hill. From here it is possible to see Snowdon and the Great Orme in Wales. Face the opposite direction and you are staring into the Yorkshire fells. Further round at the top of Harris End Fell, the Lake District and Langdale Pikes offer a rugged profile. Unlike the Lakes however, you will have quiet roads all day. At this point look out to sea. It is possible to see the Isle of Man if clear and crisp. A vision never forgotten.

After climbing one of the areas hidden secrets known as the ‘Plantation’ you will venture deep into the Bowland Uplands and the picturesque ‘Pass of Bowland’ known locally as ‘The Trough.’ Here the River Wyre is adorned by natural pine trees supporting one of the most scenic roads in the country.

From ‘The Trough’ it is a rapid descent back into the Hodder Valley where the Queen has said she would like to retire. Bearing left at the famous Inn at Whitewell the climbs come even more rapidly. Some of these roads are single track, originally laid down by the Romans (who apparently have been seen by some, marching above the road from their waist upwards). These roads and others will give you a feel of tough Belgian ‘Flanders’ territory. Hall Hill is followed by Marl Hill, Newton and Tosside before at last you can enjoy a long wind down into the River Ribble and a healthy portion of Hot Pot at the finish. Riders wishing to opt for a shorter route can continue after Hall Hill and enjoy the sweeping descent back into Clitheroe. You may even squeeze in two portions of nosh before the others get round? Estimated time for an averagely fit rider 4 hrs 40 mins including stop at feed.
