Liphook Charity Bike Ride

Cycle Sportive , Liphook – Sunday, 12 Jun 2016

Event Summary

Event Overview

The Liphook Charity Bike Ride ( Formerly LIDBA)

In 1991, two LiDBA members, Peter Keenan and Peter Lawrance, returned from a Charity Cycle Ride from Hayling Island to Paris. They had a great time and saw how lots of money was raised by sponsorship and associated activities.

Why couldn’t we do it around Liphook?

On a freezing cold morning that June, 109 intrepid souls set off from the Bohunt field, bound for Alton via Selbourne, returning down Worldham Hill. Four charities had teams entered - Liphook Age Concern, McMillan Service, Liphook Youth Football Club and Liss Venture Scouts.

Des Ratcliffe was Rider Number 1, and many names from that year’s list have featured every year since.

Nobody knew how many people would do it or whether it would raise any money. In the end, £4,170 came from the 1991 Event – not as much as the last Auction but as a first go with a lot of lessons learned, the event was considered a success.

For the following years, a bigger machine was set into action. All the LiDBA supported causes were encouraged to take part, either with rider teams, running stalls, or maybe just helping us with the vast amount of work that makes the Ride happen.
