Route Descriptions

Sportive Black route - 92 Miles

The Black route is a testing 92 mile cycle with almost 5,000 feet of climbing.  Starting at Fife College, the route will take the riders south towards Dalgety Bay before joining the A901 just prior to Aberdour.  From there it travels along to Kirkcaldy passing the newly constructed promenade and continuing East on the A955 through Dysart, Coaltown of Wemyss (20 miles), Buckhaven and into Leven.  At Leven Links the riders join the A915 and continue through Lundin Links, Upper Largo and up the climb towards Largoward. At this point the Black route turns inland onto the B940 to Pitscottie where it turns East towards the beautiful village of Ceres (40 miles) on the B939 before joining the A916 at Craigrothie.  The route then follows this undulating road for several miles before turning right to Freuchie, Falkland and Auchtermuchty on the B936.  As with all junctions, care must be taken to cross the A91 then we continue on the B936 before taking a left onto the A913 to Newburgh (60 miles).  Continuing along this road the riders go through Abernethy before turning right and cycling south up the steep hill and past the Off Road Driving centre at Glentarkie.  This is followed by a welcome descent to Strathmiglo (taking care to cross the A91)  before travelling in the shadow of West Lomond along Dryside Road to Wester Balgedie.  A right turns takes the riders towards Kinross on the A911 and on reaching the Community Campus it's a right turn through Kinross (80 miles) heading south.  On exiting the town, the route bears right, under the M90 motorway and towards Cleish where another testing climb up Cleish Hill from Nivingston House awaits the riders.  Once over the summit there is a lovely descent through Blairadam Forest before turning right and cycling through Bowershall, Townhill and on reaching Dunfermline we turn left and continue along to Kingseat.  Just as the route reaches Kingseat, it's a right turn onto Kingseat Road and the finish line is almost in sight after 92 miles of cycling.

Challenge Red route - 60 Miles

The Red route is a 60 mile cycle and an ideal challenge distance complete with almost 3,000 feet of climbing.  Starting at Fife College, the route initially follows the same roads as the Black route and takes the riders south towards Dalgety Bay before joining the A901 just prior to Aberdour.  From there it travels along to Kirkcaldy passing the newly constructed promenade and continuing East on the A955 through Dysart, Coaltown of Wemyss (20 miles) and to the entrance to Buckhaven.  At this point the Red route splits from the Black and turns left onto the B930 and goes north until it turns right at Standing Stane Road on the A916.  The route then travels through Windygates and onto Kennoway.  From here the route takes the Sportive riders through some beautiful countryside to Freuchie (take must be taken crossing the A92) where it rejoins the Black route for a short time through Falkland before continuing along the A912 to Strathmiglo (37 miles).  The route then rejoins the Black route and goes along the shadow of West Lomond on Dryside Road to Wester Balgedie.  A right turns takes the riders towards Kinross on the A911 and on reaching the Community Campus it's a right turn through Kinross (47 miles) heading south. Just as the route reaches Kingseat, it's a right turn onto Kingseat Road and the finish line is almost in sight after 60 miles of cycling.

Steady Green route - 28 Miles

The Green route is an ideal distance of 28 miles for novice Sportive riders.  It still features 1500 feet of climbing and is not to be under estimated.  Starting at Fife College, the Green route initially follows the same route as the Red and Black and takes the riders south towards Dalgety Bay before joining the A901 just prior to Aberdour.  From there it travels along the B9157 (Kirkcaldy Road) for 2.5 miles before turning left onto the A909.  A short climb takes the riders past Mossmorran and continues along the A909 and up Cowdenbeath High Street before turning right towards Lochgelly (14 miles) on the B981.  The riders continue through Lochgelly, down the hill passing the entrance to Lochore Meadows Country Park and into Ballingry.  At this point, the route turns left in Ballingry and climbs up the country road in the shadow of Benarty Hill.  This is followed by a sweeping descent towards Kelty where a left turn is taken onto the B996.  Just prior to reaching Kelty a right turn is taken and the route travels through Maryburgh (21 miles) and onto the B917 towards Kelty Cross.  The riders travel south at this juncture, bearing right at the mini roundabout and onto the final climb of the day on the B912 to Kingseat.  At the far end of Kingseat the route turns left onto Kingseat Road and the finish line is almost in sight after 28 miles of cycling.
