Event Overview

Once again the championships - the pinnacle of the South West regional calendar – will take place in Hatherleigh, Devon. Riders will battle on a challenging but balanced route to decide this year’s Junior, Women’s and Men’s champions.

The 2013 titles went to Tom Bayliss (Junior), Mathilde Pauls (Women) and George Pym (Senior). All are eligible to defend their regional championship status, but are sure to face stiff competition from the region’s leading riders. However, the championships are not just about the winners, this is the one chance in the year to gather together with the regions riders for a straight up road race; to rate yourself against your immediate cycling peers. It’s a superb race to be a part of and as well as acknowledging the winners achievements, the top finishing third category riders there will also be rewarded.

There will be separate races for the Junior and Women in the morning, with the Men racing in the afternoon, over 80miles of Devon’s finest roads. Organised by the SW Regional Road Race Workgroup, and kindly supported by Primal clothing and Roger Young cars, we are looking for this to be the biggest and best regional championships ever.

George Pym defends title of South West Regional Road Race Championship

Posted 18/05/2014 - John Nye

Report by Snowdon Sports

Teenager George Pym defended his South West Regional Road Race Championship title as he came though a tough race to take a sprint finish victory.

The 19-year-old Primal Starley Pro Cycling rider was part of a six-man break, formed after 30 miles and tasked with chasing down the leaders.

The group was eventually whittled down to just four and with five miles of the race remaining, they finally caught the leaders.

Andrew Feather made an attack going up the final climb and Pym responded well, keeping him in sight.

There were five riders all in with a shout of taking the title but it was Pym who got across the line first, adding to his win in 2013 and his junior title in the previous year.

The leading group of five riders had 25 seconds on the chasing group and six-and-a-half minutes on the bunch after what was a tough, hilly race. Andrew Feather finished in second and Blake Pond of Devon Wheelers was third.

George said after the race: “It was really tough today and a hilly course. I picked up a cold and I’m just coming here off the back of Lincoln.

“My legs were stiff but after a while they started to loosen up after an hour or so. It’s great to defend the title – that’s three years in a row now that I’ve won including the junior title. I’ll be looking to keep that going for sure.”

In the women’s race, Tamina Oliver of Endura Lady Force gave a masterclass in racing. Exeter Wheeler Heidi Viles made a break and Tamina went with her before dropping her on lap six and taking the win by three minutes.
