Rapha Condor teenager Hugh Carthy stormed to an impressive victory in event six of the CDNW Road Race League, held at Old Hutton on Sunday.
The 19-year-old from Preston had only entered two previous rounds, finishing fifth on the opening day and second in round three.
But he won this round at a canter, crossing the line almost two and a half minutes ahead of Leisure Lakes Bikes rider Giles Drake. Drake himself was comfortable in second place, ending the contest with a 13 second lead over Madison Genesis’ Andy Tennant.
Tennant did well to secure third, coming through a four-man sprint to land the last place on the podium.
Peter Brook was victorious in the category three and four support race. The Chester RC man beat Summit Cycling’s Joshua Jardine and Weaver Valley’s James Risk to the line by just three seconds.
Hugh said after the race: “It was a hard start, a hilly race with along long drag up to the finish. The riders were all together early on, and then a couple of riders got away and I bridged across to them.
“With two laps to go, one dropped off and I took off from the front and did the last lap and a half on my own.
“I’m in good form at the moment and I’ve had an excellent weekend. I won a Witham Wheelers 10km yesterday and I’ve got a few big races coming up, tours of Japan and Korea.”
