Out the Saddle 1

Cycle Sportive , Cockermouth – Saturday, 12 Oct 2013

Event Summary

Event Overview

October 2013 sees the introduction of the first Out The Saddle event in the Lake District organised in partnership by Rather Be Cycling and Mark Likeman of Race Timing Systems.

So why’s it called Out The Saddle …?  Well, given it’s being held in the Lake District it’s all about the climbing and Out The Saddle differs from your normal sportive because we are timing your performance on the climbs.  Multiple timing units around the course will capture your Pass Climb Times and finally settle those “who’s the best” arguements and prove who the real Kings & Queens of the Mountains actually are.  In between you can take the descents and flat sections (ha ha) nice and easy, spin your legs, chat with friends and save your energy for your next uphill assault.

The route is Mark’s favourite benchmarker and he uses it to test where his legs are at.  It’s a fifty mile loop with 2,054m of ascent including FOUR classic Lakeland Pass climbs – Whinlatter Pass (twice) from the Lorton side on the way out and from Braithwaite on the return, Honister Pass from Seatoller and Newlands Pass from Buttermere.  The route starts and finishes at Graysonside near Cockermouth in the beautiful Lake District National Park.

The event HQ is at Graysonside and there will be hot food and drinks available at the finish.  Accommodation is also available on site so why not make a weekend of it?

We would like to remind you, that as with all cycle sportives, this is not a race but a timed personal challenge.  One which gives you the opportunity to tackle the climbs full gas whilst taking the descents and flat sections steady away.

The climbs, in order, are: The Catbells Rise (below Catbells on the back Derwent Water road to Grange), Honister from Seatoller, Newlands from Buttermere and Whinlatter from Braithwaite.  Your first ascent of Whinlatter from Lorton is an untimed warm up.
