Location: Dowson Primary School, Hyde, Tameside
Event: 20 October 2012

Young cyclo-cross racers descended on Dowson Primary School in Hyde for an action packed morning of racing on 20 October.

Riders from across Tameside and the North West were put through their paces at the Go-Ride event, each competing in a closely fought skills competition followed by mass start cyclo-cross races.

The event kick started the Tameside Go-Ride Winter race season with Schools Club Dowson Go-Ride supporting and promoting the race.

The challenging skills course tested cornering and bike control as well as more advanced techniques such as manualling. The under 8’s and Under 10’s competed on a simplified course with Ben Mullins cruising to victory in the Under 8’s category with Michael Postlethwaite in second and Mackenzie Lea in third. Over an undulating course in the cyclo-cross race featuring banking, boards and some fast descents, Maddie Fox took a convincing victory over Mullins and Ethan Grimshaw.

In the under 10’s school mates Thomas Oakes and Izzy Petruzelli took second and third respectively with James Ford not only winning the skills competition but also the following cross race which saw him pip Jake Lindley and Joshua Jeffries to the line.

The under 12’s skills competition was a closely fought battle between Cameron Bates and Robert Donaldson of local club Mossley CRT and Gloria Eden. The crowd gathered as all three riders completed the course without fault before the deciding runs left Bates third, Donaldson second and Eden first.

The boys battled again over the course of the cross race with Donaldson taking victory from Bates. Karl Tyrrell rode an excellent race holding position and finishing a well-deserved third place.

Callum Morris did the Double in the older age category with team mate Gam Hasson taking second in front of Ben Gleeson of Eastland’s Velo. In the Cross race Maddie Longsden chased hard but had to settle for second place behind Morris and in front of Gleeson.

The next event in the Tameside Go-Ride Calendar follows the same format and will run at St Paul’s Primary in Hyde on November 10 at 9.30am.
