Jonathan Noble Memorial Cyclo-Cross

With incessant heavy rain on already damp ground, the Jonathan Noble Memorial Cyclo-Cross - fourth round of the Yorkshire Points series - was always going to be a mudbath. Nonetheless, over 150 riders turned up to tackle the excellent course, which wound its way round playing fields, before dipping in and out of woodland.

First off were the Youths and Billy Harding soon stamped his authority on the race, pulling out a gap of over half a minute in the first lap and never looking back, claiming a classy win which set him up well for next week's opening round of the National Trophy series. Second was Edwyn Oliver-Evans, who shook off race-long companion, Jake Womersley on the last lap. Amira Mellor was the first female rider home in tenth.

A big field of over 30 under-12 riders looked as much at home in the mud as anyone and produced some great racing. Ben Wait took the honours from Thomas Humphrey. Nicole Stiff was the first Under-12 Girl. Other category winners included Jenson Young and Ava Oxley (under-10), and Chloe Hinchcliffe and Marcus Hiley (under-8).

The Veteran's race went to Mike Young, who had Jonathan Watson for company for the first three laps, but Young gradually pulled clear as the conditions deteriorated and he claimed the win by just over 50 seconds in the end. Watson was second, with Chris Taylor third. Nicola Butler claimed another win in the Women's event, edging our Claire Crabtree. First over-50 was Peter Wilkin, with John Ginley taking the Over-60 category.

Tim Bladwin won the Senior race. It was a popular win for a rider who has started the season in great form and he coped well with the, by now, horrendous mud. He had Junior rider Joe Moses for company for much of the race, but threw off his Paul Milnes team-mate on the penultimate lap and soloed to victory. Two further Juniors, Jack Clarkson and Adam Martin, were third and fourth, with Veteran National Series holder Chris Young fifth.
