Western Cyclo Cross League Round 1
13 Sept 2009 - Promoted by Team Striking Bikes.
The new Gloucester Based team- Team Striking Bikes -had a brilliant launch, with perfect weather and the biggest Western League field for many years! Sixty plus riders were to enjoy a fast, dry and extended course based next to the river Severn.
Notable riders were last year's Western League winner, Scott Chalmers, and national Youth Champion Luke Gray, plus local motor-cycling star Scott Redding (Motor GP 125 Donnington winner 2008) riding his first cyclo cross.
Scott Chalmers had a flying start- his early gap had been closed during the second lap by Crispen Doyle. The warm weather and fast conditions encouraged some risk taking, and Chalmers paid the price when negotiating the gulley- he hit the bottom too hard, wrote off his front wheel, and then was ridden over, winding him. Doyle didn't waste time building on his gift lead- behind, a group of ten riders were fighting it out. None of the seniors could hold on to the young legs of Luke Gray, and local riders Barry Holley (in his usual baggy shorts) was showing Simon Burgess what he needed to do if he wanted his silver in the league. Junior Scott Redding finished at a creditable 36th- he returns to his Apprilla 125cc motorbike in the Portugal Grand Prix next week, but vowed to be back.
The Vets were evenly spread amongst the field, with Garry Clarke taking the honours from Dave Mullen.
