Crampton Claims First Win

Claire Crabtree, the lone female rider in the over-14 race
The penultimate round of the Paul Milnes Cycles sponsored Yorkshire summer Cyclo-Cross series took place at the familiar Huddersfield New College venue. Despite a day of heavy rain, the course held up very well and the slick, mainly grass surface made for some surprisingly rapid racing.
The Under-14 race was dominated by Seb Marsh, who rode clear from the start and continued to pull away smoothly throughout. He was chased by Chris Barnes, who went on to finish second, the first of the Under-12 competitors. First girl over the line was Jennie Roberts, whilst Mason Hollyman was the first Under-10 and Henry Hollyman the first under-8.

The Senior race saw a barnstorming start by Scott Woodhead and Jough Watson, but by the end of the first lap a trio of riders had broken clear of the rest of the field and they duly dominated the rest of the race - Crosstrax team-mates Neal Crampton and Oli Webster found themselves in a tough battle with Paul Miles RT's Ian Taylor. Taylor and Webster already had two wins apiece in the series and Webster has been leading the overall standings.
However, it was Crampton who took the race to his rivals. He lost out in a very exciting clash with Webster at the recent Elland round of the series, when his younger rival jumped him on the last lap. This time he looked more in control of the race and duly cracked his rivals with a couple of laps to go - once the elastic had broken he was able to cruise in to a fairly comfortable win, whilst Webster and Taylor were left to contest second, with Taylor just taking it on the line.
Simon Maudsley took fourth place after a lengthy battle with Tim Baldwin, whilst close behind them Ed McParland was sixth and the first Junior to finish. Jough Watson was eventually seventh, the first Vet over the line.
Lancashire visitor, Dave Haygarth, was one of the pre-race favourites, but in his first appearence in the series he was out within half a lap with and exploded rear tub.
