Coventry Devlins Newsagents Cycle Speedway team rounded off a golden summer of success by beating Wednesfield Dragons in a dramatic last heat 88-89 victory last Sunday afternoon.

Racing in their last Midland League match of a highly successful campaign, Coventry trailed the Dragons for most of the match before they edged home in a thrilling climax.

With just one heat to go, Coventry looked to have blown their chances, trailing 85-82. However, up stepped last heat heroes Myke Grimes and skipper Dave Frith who took maximum points to earn Coventry a last gasp away win.

This win confirmed Coventry finished in third place in the Midland league division one, a vast improvement on their comeback 2012 season, when they picked up the wooden spoon.

Grimes and Polish superstar Pietak led the Hearsall Common men, both remaining unbeaten by a Wednesfield rider and the rest of the side chipped in with valuable scores to round off a memorable season.

Coventry point scorers:

Myke Grimes 20, Konrad Pietak 19, Joe McLaughlin 12, Dave Frith 11, Mason Philips 7, Lee Kemp 7, Dan Drewitt 7, Shaun Reynolds 6

Earlier in the day, Coventry were also in action against the British Team champions Wednesfield Aces, who also ride in the top tier national Elite league, and put up a fine performance in restricting the Aces to a 99-77 win.
