Hull v Poole
Event: 16 June 2013
Location: Hull Cycle Speedway Club
Report: Andy Schofield
It was disappointment for Hull in the British Team Championships first round, suffering a 75-103 home defeat at the hands of the Harboursiders. Andy Schofield reports.
Poole arrived at Hessle, for the first round of the British KO Cup, well refreshed after their overnight stay in nearby Doncaster. On a fine day Hull started well and the first four heats were drawn with Poole accustoming themselves to the raceway. The visitors made a breakthrough in the next two heats with maximums to Aaron Smith / Sam Hearn and then Aaron Morgan / Will Bristowe before Hull steadied the ship with three more drawn heats before the Interval.
Poole extended their 8 point lead when Hull’s Dominic Bent split Will Bristowe and Sam Hearne and then Leyton Glover just held off Andy Angell in a classic heat 11 encounter. The following race gave the home side some hope when a fall to Aaron Morgan let Adam Stephenson / Sam Schofield in for a 6-4 in what was to prove their only heat advantage of the day. Poole then took complete control as firstly Dominic Bent picked up an ankle injury at the start of heat 13 then Andy Angell and Sam Schofield received tape exclusions in heats 15 and 16 respectively. This signalled the opportunity for four successive maximum heat wins for the visitors and the pathway to the second round. Hull finished well with wins for Adam Stephenson and Andy Angell to keep the score line respectable.
Hull relied on Andy Angell and Adam Stephenson heavily but will be pleased that their young riders shaped up well at this level, especially in the first half. Poole will be pleased with a professional job that showcased Leyton Glover in an all-round team performance. The match was raced in a good atmosphere in front of an enthusiastic crowd and was well refereed by Mick Knowles from Sheffield.
Hull 75: Adam Stephenson 16+2, Andy Angell 15, Ben Swanborough 12, Sam Schofield 8, Ryan Harrison 8, Dominic Bent 6+1, Rob Stockton Garner 5, David Cooper 5.
Poole 103: Leyton Glover 17+2, Aaroon Morgan 14+1, Aaron Smith 14, Will Bristowe 13+1, Sam Hearn 12+2, Steve Harris 11+4, Oli Sidwick 11+1, Pete Young 11
